Screenwriting Workshop

An eight-week course, twice per week. Sessions are two hours long. 
Each student should come with a script or script idea for a short fiction film. Students will write the script under guidance during the course. Those with a ready script will work on improving it by applying what they learn.

Topics covered:

  • Classic Screenplay Structure
  • Character Arcs
  • Dialogue – the cinematic language
  • Dramaturgy - Cinematic Syntax
  • Theme & subtext
  • Conflict – plots and subplots
  • Pace, Style, and Tone
  • Visualization
  • Personal style and voice

Students will learn to:

  • Understand plot and narrative structure
  • Analyze the key components of classical dramatic narrative
  • Develop dramatic situations and scenes
  • Write engaging and entertaining dialogue between well-realized characters
  • Find their personal style and voice

Course structure:
1st week (sessions 1 & 2): Lecture on above topics
2nd week (sessions 3 & 4): Screenplay and movie breakdown and analysis (one movie/script per session)
3rd week (sessions 5 & 6): Cold readings and analysis of student scripts
4th week (session 7 & 8): Cold readings and analysis of student scripts. Casting actors for stage readings
4th week live performance: Staged readings of selected student scripts with actors and an audience
